Heaven or Heavens?
Hey Folks! Ever wondered why the Bible sometimes refers to heaven (singular) and heavens (plural)? Both Old and New Testaments relate the idea of multiple heavens and the original languages clearly communicate plurality shamayim (שָׁמַיִם) in Hebrew and ouranois (οὐράνιος) in Greek. Old Testament passages describe heaven as the atmosphere of the earth, the area beyond the atmosphere, and the dwelling place of God (Ps 148:4-6, 115:15-17, Amos 9:6). In the John’s writing in the Revelation, John experiences multiple “levels” of heaven, or the spirit realm and sees more than Jesus and angels: 1:10, 4:1, 13:1, 14:1, 19:17, 21:1, 10. Heaven is a realm beyond the physical.
What comes to mind for you when you think of heaven?
Blessings!
George
